Major trumpets clear 2000 Guineas claims

Richard Hannon had his horses in tremendous form at Newmarket’s Craven meeting but none put up a more impressive performance than his exciting Trumpet Major who gave weight and a beating to his 11 rivals in the Group 3 Novice Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes itself and looks one to give Balldoyle’s Camelot and the other long-time ante-post market leaders plenty to think about on his return visit to the track for the first colts’ classic of the season on May 5, writes Elliot Slater.
Much of the buzz and horse racing betting tips that had been anticipated for the contest was lost when the predicted hot favourite Most Improved was declared a non-runner on the morning of the race having been found to be lame at morning stables. But it would have been a cracking performance for Brian Meehan’s charge to live with, never mind beat Trumpet Major on the form the son of Arakan showed in blasting his rivals apart from the furlong pole as he ran on powerfully up the hill to score by a thrilling five-lengths from his stable companion Crius, with the talented John Gosden-trained Eastern Sun a further length-and-a-half away in third.
Horse racing Betting firms were clearly seriously impressed by the victory of last season’s Group 2 Champagne Stakes winner who gave three pounds to all his rivals, slashing Hannon’s charge from a pre-race 33/1 for the 2000 Guineas, (a race his handler has won twice before), to as short as 6/1 with some firms, although others initially offered 12/1 in places.
Richard Hannon Jnr confirmed that Trumpet Major, a bargain 20,000 guineas purchase as a yearling, will go for the mile classic and suggested the colt had probably needed the outing having done only one racecourse gallop prior to his Craven Stakes blitz of the opposition and would most probably come on a deal for this first run of the campaign.
