Summer Jumping
With Cheltenham and Aintree behind us, it’s time to start looking forward to the Summer jumping season, which sometimes gets forgotten in amongst all of the Flat action that takes place. Here, we take a look at some of the more profitable trainers, who it could pay to follow in the summer months (May to August) by examining their record over the past five years (2007-2011).
Alan Swinbank has one of the most consistent records, when you break it down year-by-year; his lowest strike-rate in the period that we are looking at is 28 per cent, and he has twice managed to hit the 50 per cent marker.
Taking a closer look at his runners, the market usually provides a good guide to the chances of the Swinbank horses, with 34 of his 35 winners having come from the first three in the betting. Market Rasen provides a very fertile hunting ground for the North Yorkshire trainer in the summer months, and his runners there should always be respected at the Lincolnshire venue.
Another name that is worthy following in the summer jumping game is Lawney Hill. Hill is steadily building momentum in the National Hunt game and her figures continue to improve. Her record in the summer is an impressive one, yielding 35 winners from 163 runners, and a profit of over £100 to level stakes.
Whilst there are some big priced winners in amongst the 35 victories, it is also heartening to see that her figures with single-price winners would have made a profit also. She should also be noted for her exceptional record, with horses that are coming back from a layoff of nine weeks or more, during May to August, 12 winners from 35 runners, giving her a very healthy profit figure of £83.40.
Others trainers that are well worth looking out for in the summer months, especially if you want to place a bet on racing, are Jonjo O’Neill, especially with his handicap hurdlers or his runners at Worcester, Anthony Honeyball (chasers), and George Moore (well worth looking out for his Sedgefield runners).
